About the CountrySTAT Kenya

Description of the National Government Mandate for Official Data Publication and Dissemination on CountrySTAT

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is the principal agency of the government involved in the collection, analysis and dissemination of statistical data and also acts as the official source for statistical information. The national government mandate for official data publication and dissemination on the CountrySTAT web site is with the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) with very close collaboration with KNBS. MoA has the mandate to produce production statistics on crops; Ministry of Livestock Development (MoLD) is responsible for the production of Livestock statistics and its related indicators, while Ministry of Fisheries Development (MoFD) is responsible for the data on Fisheries and other Indicators in the sub-sector. Different data sets are aggregated and validated at the TWG meeting before they are published in the CountrySTAT site. KNBS is represented in both the Technical Working Group (TWG) and Secretariat to ensure the quality of the official data to be disseminated. It is through the MoA and KNBS that the QUALITY of the published data is ensured.

TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP (TWG) MEETING

How CountrySTAT Kenya Achieved Its Objectives

1) Technical Working Group Meetings

When the implementation of CountrySTAT Kenya started meetings were held with the representatives from various institutions in order to form the Technical Working Group (TWG) and the National Coordinating Council to advise on the establishment, organization and operation of the project.  These meetings served as a forum to share information about the CountrySTAT framework and promote the collaboration of these institutions in the implementation of the project.  Representatives for the TWG were identified in these meetings.

2) Training workshops, data collection and validation

A number of workshops have been held in order to allow for the collection of data from institutions and the subsequent validation.  This data feeds the CountrySTAT database.  TWG members have been trained in the use of CountrySTAT in training workshops.  During each workshop there is an update of activities and discussions on the next steps in order to provide a clear picture to the group on the work remaining.  This gives the group and opportunity to strategize on how they will work together to complete the tasks.

3) Communication

Communication is a very important in the implementation of the project, and contributes positively to CountrySTAT Kenya's achievements. The main communications activities are:

  • The wide distribution of leaflets published by the CountrySTAT team in Rome, and provided to the countries for the Basic Training of Administrators
  • A Presentation on the objectives, outputs and purpose of the various meetings in relation to the implementation of the CountrySTAT framework
  • The use of articles, radio and television to provide visibility and relay the presentations made on CountrySTAT Kenya.  This includes radio interviews, newspaper articles, TV spots, etc.
